This being my second time in Cosmopolitan I was not surprised by the warmth and kindness of the campers. The children were wonderful in both their lessons and their projects. They were very patient and I am thankful.

center_of_russia_chapel.jpgWith a population of 1.5 million, Novosibirsk (pronounced nO-vo-see-bEErsk) is the third largest city of Russia (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) and the main city of Siberia. Established in 1893 as the future site of a railroad bridge to cross the great Siberian river Ob while constructing the famous Trans-Siberian Railroad in 1890s - 1900s, it officially became a town in 1903.

From 1893 until 1925, Novosibirsk was called Novonikolayevsk. The original name refers to Nicolas II (Nikolay II Alexandrovich Romanov), the last Emperor and Sovereign of Russia the Great, the Little and the White, the Grand Duke of Finland, the Tsar of Poland, etc. With the beginning of the Soviet history the city got a new name of Novosibirsk ("New Siberia") in 1925.

Novosibirsk has become the chief industrial, business, cultural and academic center of Siberia. It ranks first in the world in the city growth rate. In 1962 Novosibirsk reached a population of one million. At that time it was the youngest city in the world with over a million people. It took Novosibirsk less than 70 years to achieve that milestone, it was even faster than Chicago's growth rate during those times. A record in the Guinness Book has commemorated Novosibirsk as the fastest growing city in the world for reaching the population of 1,000,000 people quicker than any other.

Novosibirsk is the capital of the Siberian Federal District and the seat of the President’s Plenipotentiary.

Manufacturing includes mining equipment, turbines, textiles, chemicals, heavy machine tools, metallurgy production. The city is considered to be the business capital of Siberia, so the largest Siberian banks and the Siberian Stock and Commodity Exchanges are situated here.

Novosibirsk is one of the cultural centres of Russia. The cultural portrait of Novosibirsk is multifarious - architecture and painting, music and theatre, high classics and folklore - all the_opera_house.jpgkinds of culture and arts have got the new development here. Novosibirsk boasts opera and ballet companies, philharmonic society and music conservatory, several theaters, museums, and art galleries, and numerous sports facilities.

The Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Novosibirsk, one of the most impressive in Russia, was built during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and the grand opening took place on May 9, 1945, Victory Day. The Opera and Ballet Theatre, which is often called the Bolshoy Theatre of Siberia, has become the architectural symbol of Novosibirsk - one of the most remarkable buildings in the city. Not only the building is unique, but the troupe of the theatre is outstanding. The brilliant Siberian Ballet and the wonderful Opera companies are known throughout the world.

Each of the 8 city theatres is of high professionalism, has originality and all of them have got their own admires ( Novosibirsk State Academic Theatre "Krasny fakel", the Youth Theatre Globe, the Theate of music, songs and dance "Chaldony", Russian House of Folk Traditions and others).

regional_studies_museum.jpgThe Novosibirsk Philharmonic Society is among the best in Russia and in general, according to foreign critics, and it has come to represent the culture of Siberia. The Novosibirsk Philharmonic Society is unique as it is the only one in Russia that has 13 highly professional music groups including The Academic Symphony Orchestra, The Chamber Chorus, The Chamber Music Orchestra and others. The Novosibirsk Music Conservatory’s particular pride is its violin school that has prepared a number of world-class violinists. Novosibirsk is famous for its jazz and folk groups as well.

Novosibirsk Regional Studies Museum, being one of the major museums of Siberia, has a unique collection, which illustrates 150,000 years of Siberian history, and describes the nature, native culture and population from the Paleolithic Period to the modern era. Museum also organizes archaeological and anthropological expeditions and runs educational programmes including lectures and seminars, meetings with famous scientists, folk-festivals, etc.

a_wooden_house.jpgThe city of Novosibirsk is proud of the largest in Siberia Picture Gallery. Its exposition includes more than 6 000 works of art of famous Russian and foreign painters. A real pearl of the exhibition is the collection of N.Rerikh' s pictures, which was presented to the city by the artist's son. The Gallery is also well known for a collection of icons of Moscow and Siberian school.

Novosibirsk is also a scientific and educational center of Siberia, being home of one of Russia's best universities, a large number of institutes and scientific research centers. The Akademgorodok created in Novosibirsk in 1950s was the first in Russia large center of science, established far from Moscow or Leningrad (St.Petersburg) by a group of prominent scientists (Lavrentyev, S. L. Sobolev, S. A. Khristianovich and others). They attracted gifted researchers from the country's western regions to the development of Siberian science.

Today Akademgorodok is the seat for the Siberian Branches of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation, with a unique complex of scientific and research institutes, Academy of Agriculture and Academy of Medicine. Researches and investigations in the field of alexander_nevsky_cathedral.jpgmathematics and nuclear physics, chemistry and genetics, biology and geology, ecology and philosophy, applied mechanics and hydrodynamics are conducted in the scientific and research institutes of Akademgorodok. You will also have a chance to see the rich collection of the mineralogical museum and visit the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, where ancient Siberian stone statues are exhibited.

Novosibirsk is the third city in Russia (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) where a subway system was established. The Novosibirsk Metro (subway), opened in 1985, now has two lines and is clean, safe and nicely decorated.

Novosibirsk is famous for its sports. Sibir ice hockey team of Novosibirsk plays in the Kontinental Hockey Leauge. Sibir Novosibirsk football team plays in the Russian First Division. There are two basketball teams that play in the Men’s and the Women’s Russian Basketball Super League. Novosibirsk has numerous sports facilities.

The Zoo of Novosibirsk is a world renowned zoo and a popular tourist attraction to the city. voznesensky_cathedral.jpgThe zoo has over 4000 species of animals, and actively participates in thirty-two different societies for preserving endangered species. On average, around 700,000 people visit the zoo each year.

There are a lot of nice restaurants and cafes in Novosibirsk, which offer excellent traditional Russian food as well as delicious European, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and other cuisine.

The traditional hospitality of Siberians is well matched by the weather which is a welcome surprise to many visitors. Winters are cold but sunny; summers are short but warm and pleasant.

Novosibirsk is an interesting mix of a big city and provincial town. The monumental central avenue (with Stalinist buildings), squared functionally planned streets, famous University, large railway station, and village-like suburbs, helpful people and reasonable prices – all in one city.

Siberia has been opening up to the West and offers a range of still unexplored experiences and opportunities. As the cultural, scientific and educational center of Siberia, surrounded by picturesque wooded and field areas, Novosibirsk is an excellent place for immersion in the Russian language and culture, and provides many opportunities to experience the hospitality and cordiality Siberians are famed for.

CULTURAL AND EXCURSION PROGRAMMEwinter_fun.jpg
Our WINTER CAMP is a unique opportunity to celebrate the coolest festive
season in Siberia with lots of exciting events, and experience all the
winter fun you have ever dreamed of in ten days. Too many things are

customs, ceremonies and holidays are an integral part of every culture of
the world, demonstrating that despite linguistic, cultural, and ethnic
differences, people from around the globe share the same hopes, dreams,
interests and concerns.

The cultural program of the Winter Camp integrates language education into exciting daily activities which in addition to the daily language classes, also include arts and crafts projects, Creativity Workshops, sports and outdoor activities, music and drama, games and contests, art and drawing, inventive engaging performances and shows.

The Camp lives a full cultural and social life. The educational theme is developed through a range of social activities in which all those attending participate. Both the students and the teachers are grouped into teams which compete and interact daily in all aspects of daily life thus encouraging social interaction and breaking down of cultural, social and age barriers. Living in a close community helps to develop these social skills and encourages thoughtfulness and respect for others and – above all - a friendly, caring atmosphere which affects and changes for the good the whole character of those attending. Special psychology, dance and vocal courses are run to assist in this aim and to further develop communication skills.

Daily creativity projects are run by the native speakers of the languages taught at the camp and these are run along the line of the theme of the camp designed to enable students and teachers to better express themselves and develop social skills. Recent example have included improvised drama on a theme, Scottish Country Dancing, creative arts, film-making, and dramatisation of classical literature and mythical stories. The creativity workshops run for one hour every afternoon and are carefully coordinated and supervised by a native English speaker who has been attending the programme for many years.

Each camp has a specific role-play theme which permeates all activities. Daily evening shows develop this theme and provide a venue for drawing together all the camp activities. There is a healthy competition between the teams of teachers and students and points are keenly awarded or deducted from teams for creativity, participation, discipline and all aspects of daily life. One of the highlights of the Winter Camp is the RUSSIAN CHRISTMAS celebration (January 7th).

Even the varied sports and healthy activities are linked to the main and daily themes . Beginning with morning exercises with a difference and continuing with afternoon sports all nourished by healthy food and outdoor activities in the beautiful tree-lined territory which is ecologically pure and healthy.

On completion of the session, excursions to other historically and culturally important destinations can be organized. For more details click here.

Russian culture focusing on the importance of complete linguistic and cultural immersion, and provides incredible opportunities for experiencing the hospitality and cordiality Siberians are famed for.

Nowadays it is a large industrial, cultural, scientific and transport center of Central Siberia. A tour of the city includes visits to local museums, and a famous "Stolby" National Reserve situated in a picturesque suburban area.

Irkutsk was founded in 1661 when the Russian military cossack troops established a fortress on the right bank of the Angara River. From late 17th century, it was a political, economical and cultural center of Siberia. The city's Russian classical architecture dates from the period of the 1880s when the city boomed after gold was discovered in the area. Most of the brick mansions and grand public buildings varying in architectural styles were constructed in the late 19th - early 20th century. The beautiful Russian Orthodox churches and a Polish Cathedral are located in downtown. Tourists will see many small one- and two-stored wooden houses or cabins that are decorated with "wooden laces" (hand-made carvings) as well as modern constructions of the 20th century. Our Russian studies programs are aimed at achieving practical fluency and confidence in the use of the Russian language with the focus on the integration of all the four language learning components and skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and the emphasis on communication. We believe that the individual communicative approach and complete language and cultural immersion that we apply in our school are the most effective methods of language learning. The objective of the course is for students to acquire elementary/pre-intermediate/intermediate/advanced proficiency in spoken and written Russian, focusing particularly on grammatical accuracy and oral communication in practical settings.

david_weis_with_olesya_teacher_of_russian.jpgThe Russian Course outline:

development of proper pronunciation and intonation habits,

acquiring communicative speech skills and development of the student's oral comprehension,

systematical study of essential Russian grammar, lexical and grammar phrase formation, use of proper sentence structure,

vocabulary expansion, vocabulary being introduced gradually and systematically,

accumulation of the cultural country knowledge with the aim of understanding social background,

reading and comprehension of the Russian fiction texts and periodicals.

building-up writing skills.

Russia has always been a strange and fascinating place, with its mixture of globe-shaking politics and world-class culture. Our goal in Russian Studies is to prepare our students to observe and understand Russia, past and present. People from their teens to their nineties from all walks of life immerse themselves in the language and culture of Russia through extensive daily instruction, tutoring by well-educated teachers who are Russian native speakers trained to teach foreigners, and the dynamic cultural life of the school.

TESTING
On the first day of the session all the students get tested and assigned into groups by volunteer teachers. For the test all the students are split up into small groups for a written test and an oral interview. Before the test all the teachers get together and choose the main topics and questions for the interview, the assessment criteria, and the grading system. As they talk to the students in their test group they grade them, and when all the teachers gather together after the test they discuss the results of both written and oral parts of the test, and assign all the students into groups according to their language levels.
 david_weis_testing_the_students_on_the_first_day_of_the_session.jpg
 LANGUAGE LEVELS
We normally have quite a wide range of language levels at each camp session: from Beginners through Advanced. Most of our former teachers have volunteered to teach all ages and language levels. Every teacher is assigned to a classroom and groups rotate according to the daily schedule. Depending on the number of teachers and groups at each session, each teacher would have each particular group either every day or every other day.
 peter_griffiths_teaching_a_class.jpg
 CLASSES
ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN classes are taught by foreign volunteer teachers. Each teacher conducts four or five 35-minute classes in the morning from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. daily except excursion days. The lesson plan and structure fall under teacher's discretion. The courses should be designed to be challenging and amusing at the same time with the emphasis made on learning through fun.
 basile_beaty_teaching_a_class.jpg
 TEACHING TECHNIQUES/METHODS
Within a variety of techniques/methods of language teaching that can be applied, and the language aspects, each teacher can choose to teach a course concentrating on a particular aspect, such as conversations, grammar in use, language games, discussions, drama, etc., or work out a course based on a combination of aspects. We are open to ideas, so a teacher can feel free to suggest what he/she thinks would work best.

Some of our former teachers have wondered whether they should focus more on culture or grammar, and whether the emphasis should be made on conversation or syntax. You should certainly concentrate more on conversation and improving the students' speaking skills. The cultural aspect is also very important.

Teachers should follow the topics of each day with the students who are close to intermediate and advanced language levels. It's more important to improve the students’ speaking skills, so teachers should encourage them to speak in the class. When the students listen to the teacher, to other students in the class and to the tapes, they improve their listening skills. Teachers can also give them some reading materials like texts, stories, magazine/newspaper articles. They can also think of some exercises to develop the students’ writing and creative writing skills (writing an essay, a composition, etc.). It will be a good idea to give some topical vocabulary on the theme of each day, including words, word combinations and phrases, set expressions, etc.

As far as Grammar is concerned, teachers can certainly give the students some grammar exercises so that they repeat the major grammar themes like verbs and tenses, singular and plural forms of a noun, question forms, etc.

With the students of lower language levels, and especially with the ones who are close to zero level, it would be quite challenging to work within the suggested topic every day. You could give these students some simple vocabulary on each topic of the day, and do more games and creative activities that involve drawing, singing, acting, poetry, etc.
 learning_colours_and_parts_of_body_through_twister_game.jpgian_hipkin_teaching_a_class.jpg
 TEACHING MATERIALS
Teaching materials that can be used in the class are as follows: course-books, textbooks, exercise-books, grammar exercises, magazine and newspaper articles, video, educational and music tapes, questionaries for discussion, quizzes, role-plays, fun games and activities, etc., all related to the topic of the day. The most important thing is to encourage the students to speak, but at the same time you should have materials that will help in terms of the contents of the theme and topics to speak about.
 computer_class.jpg

CREATIVITY WORKSHOPS
In addition to the morning classes each volunteer teacher normally supervises a Creativity Workshop in the afternoon. It's one hour work that involves some creative activity like dancing, singing, acting, performing, drawing, arts and crafts, web design, poetry, etc. The contents of the Creativity Workshop should in some way be related to the general theme of the camp session.

This is the list of some of the Creativity Workshop projects run by our former volunteer teachers: Line Dancing, Square Dancing, Creating the World Anthem, Club of Young Poets, Photo Lab, Time Capsule, Culture of Native Americans, Aboriginal (Native Australian) Painting, Web Design, National US Holidays, Summer School Quilt, Irish Dance, Christmas Story, etc. A teacher chooses an activity according to his/her interests and skills. Ideally, a Creativity Workshop should be related to the theme of the session or to some topic discussed through the session.

A teacher has a Creativity Workshop group for five days. The students come to a workshop class for one hour in the afternoon every day and do a presentation on the sixth day of the camp. Then a new group comes for the next five days and does a presentation on the last day of the camp. A teacher can do the same type of the activity for both workshop groups because there will be different students in each group.

Social Development

The educational theme is developed through a range of social activities in which all those attending participate. Both the students and the teachers are grouped into teams which compete and interact daily in all aspects of daily life thus encouraging social interaction and breaking down of cultural, social and age barriers. Living in a close community helps to develop these social skills and encourages thoughtfulness and respect for others and – above all - a friendly, caring atmosphere which affects and changes for the good the whole character of those attending. Special psychology, dance and vocal courses are run to assist in this aim and to further develop communication skills.
socialising.jpg african_football_international_team.jpg
 Cultural

Daily creativity workshops are run by volunteer  teachers and these are run along the line of the theme of the camp designed to enable students and teachers to better express themselves and develop social skills. Recent example have included improvised drama on a theme, Scottish Country Dancing, creative arts, film-making, and dramatisation of classical literature and mythical stories. The creativity workshops run for one hour every afternoon and are carefully coordinated and supervised by a native English speaker who has been attending the programme for many years.
 scottish_dance.jpg  sean_doyle_as_a_wolf_and_his_creativity_workshop_presentation.jpg
 Entertainment

Each camp has a specific role-play theme which permeates all activities. Daily evening shows develop this theme and provide a venue for drawing together all the camp activities. There is a healthy competition between the teams of teachers and students and points are keenly awarded or deducted from teams for creativity, participation, discipline and all aspects of daily life.

Native English speakers from many countries are brought to the camp to interact and share their experiences with all present. Volunteer teachers and international interns attending include those from the United Kingdom, of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, France, Spain, Finland, Australia, the United States, Canada and Poland. Daily they teach English to small classes of carefully grouped students according to age and ability. These lessons are prepared in advance by the teachers and according to the daily theme of the camp; and the teachers are co-ordinated daily by a Russian head of studies. The content of the lessons is designed to be interesting and fun as well as educational, ranging in content from simple oral/vocabulary activities and games suitable for complete beginners to the most advanced requirements of the University entrance exams. Recent examples of the daily theme are: films, topical events, social issues, sports and hobbies.  peter_thomas_teaching_a_class.jpg
Students may also choose one other language to study during the camp: recent second languages always included French and often German, Spanish and sometimes Japanese and Arabic are offered according to the skills of the teachers.   jonathan_simon_after_his_french_class.jpg
We also attract international students from schools and universities the world over who wish to attend the programme to improve their Russian Language skills. Recently these have included several students of school age from Sweden and America. Students have attended from the leading Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Trinity College, Dublin and St. Andrew's, Edinburgh.  ben_griffiths_learning_russian.jpg
At the end of the camp diplomas and certificates are awarded to every student according to ability and achievement.

METHODOLOGY

The aim of our methodology is to make you comfortable using your new language in the practical situations that you encounter in everyday life. We believe that the individual communicative approach and complete language and cultural immersion, that we apply in our school, are the most effective methods of language learning.

The individual approach speeds up the learning process and focuses on the needs of the particular student. The student is encouraged to specify by completing a "needs analysis" prior to arrival whether he/she has any particular topics/fields of interest that should be covered during the course. This provides the teacher with an idea of the participant’s goals and allows to pre-select materials and establish a study plan.

We tailor-design a special curriculum based on an assessment of your language needs, interests, and the written test and oral interview you take during your first day. The focus is made on the integration of all the four language learning components and skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and the emphasis on communication.

We use the direct approach which means that the student and the teacher speak only in the language being learned, and this forces you to think in your new language. At the same time, if you face a serious problem in understanding, all our teachers speak English and other languages, and can explain the most difficult language issues in your native language.

EVALUATION

Your teacher is constantly evaluating your progress through regular homework, a feedback session every Friday, which is used to discuss the previous week and the plans for the following week, and a weekly quiz on the language learned that week. Regular and end of course tests are given to each student to evaluate the language level reached.

In addition to the ongoing teacher evaluation, the Program Director is constantly monitoring your course to assure that you are not only learning as quickly as possible, but that you are also enjoying your stay with your host family and taking advantage of the many activities and excursions offered by the school.

Our goal is that you have the most enjoyable experience possible during your stay with us, and that you progress in the language you are learning as quickly as you can. As proof of your efforts you receive a certificate at the end of your course.

lenin_square.jpgA student can also add dynamic "Live and Learn" Intercultural Conversational Sessions to the standard Russian course. These sessions take place outside of the classroom in the afternoons and are designed so that students must use the Russian that they have been learning in class, but in real-life situations. With the assistance of their teacher or the program coordinator, students carry out everyday tasks in Russian, such as shopping, going to the bank, buying stamps to mail a postcard, asking for directions, and asking for specific information, etc.

This is a unique opportunity for students to build their confidence in the language and gain insights into the society. This part of the program is very intensive, effective, and fun. It gives you an excellent opportunity to experience different parts of the city and activities you might miss otherwise. You will be able to hear and use Russian in "the real world", with your own personal instructor to help you and make sure this is common and useful language that will really have you feeling like part of the community.
